Austin is an Asheville native who began his teaching career as an outdoor educator with Outward Bound and Appalachian State Outdoor Programs. He began teaching math as part of the faculty at The Outdoor School in Brevard, where he also served as a climbing instructor. He then ventured farther afield, serving as an IB math and physics teacher in Panama and then Turin. Austin and his wife Ashley returned to Asheville just before having their daughter. Upon returning to the US he joined the faculty at Carolina Day. He brings a commitment to the power of outdoor education, along with an appreciation for exposing students to rigorous standards through mathematical problem-solving skills that connect to the world around us. He is looking forward to teaching in a public school setting, bringing all of his interests together, and giving back to the community he grew up in.
