Devan Dixon joins Franklin School of Innovation with 12 years of experience in high school education, having previously taught world history, civics, government, contemporary history, and AP Human Geography. Devan holds teaching certificates in social studies for grades 6-12 in Florida, Virginia, and now North Carolina and is hoping to begin pursuing National Board Certification within the next year.
An energetic social studies teacher, Devan is dedicated to creating a stimulating learning environment through a multidisciplinary approach to social studies. Her goal is to encourage students to seek a deeper understanding of how historical events have shaped the modern world. Devan spent over 8 years teaching social studies at the college prep, honors, and AP levels in Florida and 3 years in Virginia as both an Instructional Technology Specialist and AP teacher. Over her 12 years in education, Devan has been awarded both Google and Apple Education certifications and presented at the annual conference for the National Council for the Social Studies.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and History from the University of South Florida and a Master of Arts in History from Arizona State University. Additionally, she has coached swimming and assisted with physical performance training in Virginia, bringing her teaching skills outside the classroom to develop whole person growth. Devan is passionate about using current technologies and methods to make history relatable, fostering an inspirational learning environment where students are active participants. She firmly believes that understanding the complexities of the modern world requires an enhanced comprehension of historical events.
When not in the classroom, Devan likes to spend her time with her husband and husky hiking and exploring the Asheville area. She also likes to travel, bike, paddleboard, and make jam. Devan’s favorite travel destination is Scotland, which is where her husband is from and where they were married. As an avid lifelong learner, Devan continues to expand her own knowledge and learning by reading extensively and she hopes to begin earning a PhD in the near future.
