We are grateful to have members of Franklin’s larger community join our eleventh grade student build crews on site to help build a Habitat for Humanity home in this year-longservice-learning project. Our adult volunteers have shared their time, energy, and enthusiasm for this project, while deepening Franklin’s community and commitment to making a positive difference in the world.
It’s not too late to join our efforts! We have 3 Franklin Build days left: Thursday, Feb. 2, Saturday, Feb. 4, and Thursday, Feb. 9. Sign uphere!
Here’s what a couple of our adult volunteers have shared about their experiences:
From Tom Kopp, adult volunteer and member of Franklin’s Board of Directors:
“As I looked down from the roof where I was hammering sheets ofplywood, I didn’t see kids hanging out — I saw a young crew of realworkers, building a real house, for a real family that will lovinglycall this place ‘home.’ It was a proud moment — the soul of servicelearning for us all.”
From Maureen Miller, volunteer and parent of 11th grader, Jacob:
"Yesterday I did something quite out of the ‘toolbox’ for me….something rich and rewarding and wonderful. I’ve rarely picked up a hammer, let alone an electric drill or a screw gun, but yesterday I did all three! I even learned how to measure and accurately cut boards with an electric saw, and I still have all my fingers!
Jacob’s junior class at The Franklin School of Innovation is participating in a Habitat for Humanity build in Asheville. What an amazing day of satisfying work, alongside my compassionate son and his classmates! The home we worked on will soon be occupied by a family and I hope that they know theirs is a house that LOVE built."
