“We are Crew, Not Passengers”

If you spend time at Franklin, at some point you’ll hear someone say “We’re Crew, Not Passengers”, or maybe just “hey, we’re Crew”. You might wonder what they mean! As an EL Education school, Crew is one way we make sure that every student has at least one adult, and a group of peers, who really know and care about them.  Crew is central to who we are as a school. Each of us has a part to play, and every part is essential. Crew helps instill a sense of responsibility and collaboration within our school and the broader community. Crew represents our commitment to being a community where everyone is valued and productive. When we are Crew, we all succeed.

At Franklin, students are placed in grade-level Crews. Crew meets daily, generally after lunch, for around 30 minutes. During this block of time, students participate in activities to build teamwork, trust, and knowledge of themselves and others. They engage in lessons and conversations focused on character and service, as well as academic and behavioral goal setting. Crew is often used as a time to investigate and resolve issues or conflicts that arise in our school community. Students may also share personal challenges they are facing, and find support from their Crew leader and peers. Crews engage in service to the school and the community. During Crew, students also set goals, reflect on their growth, and prepare for Student Led Conferences and the larger, more formalized Passage Presentations that take place at the end of 8th and 10th grades.

Crew is essential to who we are as a school. Crew is the structure through which we build strong relationships, ensuring that every student in our school is known. Crew is family.
