ESL Program
English as a Second Language
Purpose
The ESL program at FSI is designed to help our students develop their academic English in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Our goal is to provide quality and challenging instruction through an EL model, as well as wrap around services that support student and family health and success. FSI works to encourage the maintenance and growth of the student’s native language and cultures as they strengthen their English abilities, enriching our learning community as a whole.
Program Goals
- The Franklin School of Innovation strives to maintain an ESL Program that works in conjunction with the wider school system to provide inclusive, educational opportunities for students with diverse language backgrounds.
- To identify all students whose native or home language is one other than English and to assess the English language proficiency of all identified students.
- To place students in appropriate educational programs that foster maximum English and content acquisition.
- To provide specialized individualized classroom instruction for students identified as SLIF (students with limited formal education).
- To regularly assess the English proficiency and academic progress of students served by our program and adjust services according to individual student needs.
- To provide ongoing monitoring and support for students who have exited the programs.
- To provide classroom support and professional development in appropriate ESL instructional and assessment strategies to make all teachers “ESL teachers”.
- To encourage and foster opportunities for ESL students and families to build community and provide opportunities for parent and family involvement.
- To provide parental and family support as well as offer Adult ESL classes in the evenings.
- To collaborate with community stakeholders, specifically those who are working to support immigrant, migrant as well as refugee families here in our community.
