Good evening Franklin families,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed a lovely winter break despite the many challenges – freezing temperatures, water and power outages, and travel disruptions everywhere! For a final little treat, cell and internet service went down sometime last night at my family’s New Year getaway. While I enjoyed a blissful day fully offline, we’re back now and tomorrow FSI staff will ease into the new year with a packed work day. We’ll keep this week’s newsletter short and sweet as everyone gets back into the swing of the school year.
Most importantly, while Buncombe County Schools are starting the year remotely, we never lost water at school. Students will return in person on Tuesday, January 3.
As we start the year, it’s time for a couple reminders. First, COVID, flu, RSV, and other illnesses continue to circulate. Please keep a close eye out for symptoms and keep students home if they are sick. Students must be fever free without use of medication for at least 24 hours before returning to school. A positive COVID test requires isolation at home for 5 days after the onset of symptoms or the positive test (symptoms or positive test are day zero) and must wear a high quality mask for an additional 5 days. It’s not too late to get flu and COVID vaccines or boosters! Let’s all work together to keep our community healthy.
Second, prior to break I received several reports from parents about unsafe or rude driving and behavior in the car line. We all want to keep our students and staff safe. Slow down, be patient, and practice small acts of random kindness in the car line. Turn right at the exit for your safety and the safety of everyone else. You’ll be surprised how these tiny acts can improve your day!
Finally, Open Enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year began today! Open Enrollment is ONLY for students new to FSI. Returning students will fill out re-enrollment in February. Follow these guidelines to be sure you secure a spot for your student:
- Current FSI students (grades 5 – 11): No action needed right now. You will fill out re-enrollment paperwork in February.
- FSI Siblings (new to FSI): If you are applying for a sibling who is not currently enrolled at FSI – you must apply during Open Enrollment. Make sure you let us know that your child is eligible for the sibling priority enrollment.
- Friends, cousins, acquaintances: Remind your friends and acquaintances to apply during Open Enrollment! It’s very easy – just go to our website and click the “Apply Now” button on the orange banner. Applications must be submitted prior to March 31 to be entered in our enrollment lottery.
Here’s to a wonderful New Year!

Weather Closures/Delays & Remote Learning Days
As a reminder, FSI is not part of Buncombe County or Asheville City Schools. We make decisions about delays and closures based on our student population and transportation. We will announce weather closures and delays in a few ways. Parents will receive phone calls or text messages through our BrightArrow messaging system. We post information on WLOS – on their weather closures and delays section. We also send emails.
Under State guidelines, schools are allowed up to 5 remote instruction days for weather or other emergencies. Please note: If your student would be unable to participate in a remote instruction day, we can assign chromebooks for use at home. Generally, remote instruction days will not be used to introduce new content or ideas – we understand the limits of remote learning. Students may be able to use a home computer or tablet to complete assignments. If your student does not have access to a tablet or computer at home AND you did not already receive one from school, you can check out a chromebook during school hours (7:45 – 4 pm) daily.
COVID & Flu Updates
PCR testing is offered free of charge weekly, usually on Mondays. Stay tuned – with the long break I’m not sure if we will have testing on Tuesday! Testing for high school students is available from 11:30 – 1 pm in the collaboration space on the first floor of Big Ben. High school students can come on their own during lunch. Testing will then be available in Einstein, Parks, and Johnson for students in grades 5 – 8; nurses will let students know when they are available in each building. If you are new to Franklin or did not provide consent last year, you can sign in to give consent below:
