Dear Franklin families,
We have a long newsletter for a very short week! Before any of that, please pause and click this link for a short and sweet message from our students.
On Tuesday, Nov 29, we are holding our one day Annual Fund. You will hear a lot from us over the next two weeks about our Annual Fund but we promise – it’s one big push and then you won’t hear about Giving Tuesday again for a whole year! We will be livestreaming on Facebook all day from 8 am to 6 pm, with videos showcasing different programs and parts of our community along with live updates on our fundraising. Mark your calendars, find us on Facebook, and plan to join us! Here’s the schedule for the day:
- 8:00 am: Live Kickoff with the Middle School News Crew on our construction site
- 9:00 am: Bus Transportation & Beyond the Bell Programs
- 10:00 am: STEM at FSI – you’ll be amazed by how much our kids are doing!

We have a big goal this year – we need to raise $45,000 from families and friends and $35,000 in Corporate Sponsorships. While this is our largest goal ever – we would exceed this goal if every family could give $10 a month for each student we serve. We know this goal is an easy ask for some families and not possible for others. Please take time to think about what the FSI community means for your family and plan a gift that works for your family. Here are actions you can take RIGHT NOW to help us meet our goal!
- Mark your calendar for Tuesday, Nov 29. Put this link right on your calendar so that you remember to go online and make a gift! Give Today
- If you are on Facebook – share our Giving Tuesday event! Invite your friends and family members to join us every hour on the hour, from 8 am – 6 pm. Or just ask them to join you in giving? It only takes a minute and their gift may change a life. It’s cliche but true!
- Send an email, text, or social media message to your friends and family asking them to give. Make it personal – what does Franklin mean to your family? After three of the hardest years for schools in decades, the larger community knows that schools need help to heal. Our friends and family have an interest in the work we do. Include this link to give: Give Today
Do you own or manage a local business? We are currently seeking Corporate Sponsors! There are many benefits for corporate sponsors – including the opportunity to be recognized during our Giving Tuesday Annual Fund Drive. If you or your business would like to sponsor an hour of programming, please contact me (mvruwink@thefsi.us) or Micah Usher (musher@thefsi.us) to discuss a contribution, or just click here! Become a 2023 Corporate Sponsor!
A couple special shoutouts to our students!
Our middle school robotics teams competed in a First Lego League Qualifier Tournament in Charlotte Saturday. They did a spectacular job representing our school. Students presented an innovations project, explained their design process and demonstrated CORE values such as teamwork, innovation and inclusion. They also participated in a robot game where they got an amazing 200 points! Well done Robotics team!
And, our high school theatre club premiered the play “Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm”, based on a true life mystery at the Diana Wortham Performing Arts Center. It was a high quality performance with a great opportunity for the audience to interact with the cast and playwright. Bravo HS Theatre!

Once we receive your form we will follow up with an email to collect/provide more information.
Weather Closures/Delays & Remote Learning Days
It’s getting cold out there! We’ve enjoyed a lovely long and warm fall. With the onset of colder weather, we want to remind families about weather closures & delays. FSI is not part of Buncombe County or Asheville City Schools, and we may make decisions about delays and closures differently, based on our student population and transportation. We will announce weather closures and delays in a few ways. Parents will receive phone calls or text messages through our BrightArrow messaging system. We post information on WLOS – on their weather closures and delays section. We also send emails.
Under State guidelines, schools are allowed up to 5 remote instruction days for weather or other emergencies. Please note: If your student would be unable to participate in a remote instruction day, we can assign chromebooks for use at home. Generally, remote instruction days will not be used to introduce new content or ideas – we understand the limits of remote learning. Students may be able to use a home computer or tablet to complete assignments. If your student does not have access to a tablet or computer at home AND you did not already receive one from school, you can check out a chromebook during school hours (7:45 – 4 pm) daily.

Connect with Canvas
As a school, we use Canvas as a system to help students and parents keep connected with assignments and grades. This is a schoolwide program, though of course high school students use Canvas differently and more than our youngest students. Parents and guardians can download the Canvas app and connect with their student’s account. Click here to learn how to do this – it only takes a few minutes but you do need your student’s help!
