Good morning Franklin families,
Here’s to March! Did you know that we gain about 3 minutes of extra daylight each day in March? And that added daylight definitely is a mood booster. Bring on spring, new growth, and the lovely feeling of sun on our faces. I hope everyone can find a little time to get outside today.
It feels like spring in school right now. I’ve been spending as much time as I can in classrooms lately and there is a true buzz. Many grade levels are “on Expedition”, digging into learning that matters. Learning Expeditions are one of my favorite things in the EL Education model. Teachers work together to plan longer units of study that are based on big ideas or real world problems. Students dig deep into learning about problems and are often tasked with coming up with solutions. Community members join us as experts and help us celebrate at the end of the expedition. Expeditions have the power to change lives or at least ignite the spark of curiosity that drives us to learn. Expeditions cover a wide range of topics. Here are the highlights of some of the expeditions our students will experience this year!
- 6th grade’s expedition is inspired by the book “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” and by our own experiences with loss of power following Hurricane Helene. Students are learning about energy independence and exploring the viability of solar, wind and hydropower. It was such a treat to step into their classrooms and watch them problem-solving, collaborating, and creating this past week!
- 7th grade’s expedition is also inspired by the challenges of Helene, diving into the science of a changing climate and exploring how communities can use the design process for greater resiliency. As a final project, students will design a topological model of a riverbed or infrastructure to protect future generations.
- 8th grade’s “Water is Life” Expedition takes on new significance with last year’s floods still in our thoughts. Using our stretch of Hominy Creek as a natural case study, students will take a deep dive into the history, cultural importance, economic significance, and current state of the French Broad Watershed.
- 9th grade students are exploring mental health and eight “sources of strength” that can help us all live healthier lives. They are examining our core values, learning neuroscience and brain anatomy, and spending time pursuing healthy activities of their choice in different Crew groups.
- 10th grade students are preparing for life after high school with a deep dive into career exploration and the steps they need to take to be on track for what they want out of life. This expedition will really set students up for success in their last two years of high school as they shift into preparing for college and careers.
- 11th grade completed its student of the housing crisis in Asheville, learning both the challenges of affordable housing and all the organizations and initiatives underway to address this problem. Students have contributed many hours helping to build a new Habitat for Humanity home for an Asheville family.
- 12 grade students are preparing their “Last Words”, completing a senior project and presentation of their learning. Presentations will take place on Wednesday, March 25. Community members join as panelists to witness and celebrate student learning. If you are interested in hearing directly from young people about their journeys – see the blurb for volunteers later in this newsletter
Call to Action
I’m going to keep this call to action here at the front for a couple weeks. North Carolina public schools are facing a crisis that is caused directly by our elected officials. This isn’t a Democrat vs Republican thing. Other states around North Carolina are doubling down on their investment in public education – raising teacher salaries and investing in their schools. North Carolina is choosing a different path, investing billions in vouchers for private education while starving its public schools. The vast majority of our students are served in public schools so this approach doesn’t make sense on any level.
It’s time for our elected officials to do their jobs and pass a budget that fully funds our public schools. Let’s make our voices heard! It does matter. Call or email with one simple message: Pass a budget that fully funds the Leandro remediation plan.

Finally, a huge thank you to everyone who participated in our wildly successful Blood Drive! I know that they got a bit behind out there, so thank you for your extra patience as we filled the bus to overflowing. You helped meet a critical need in the community and helped us earn a $500 grant to support our Habitat for Humanity student home build.
As always, thank you for choosing Franklin and for partnering with us to prepare students for the futures they create. Our school is stronger with your participation.

Pathways is a free, virtual program that empowers high school girls and non-binary students of all experience levels — including rising 9th graders, graduating seniors, and returning participants — to explore AI, Game Design, Cybersecurity, and more, while learning how to build tech for good. The program is entirely flexible in how participants choose to learn and requires no prior coding experience. Students complete courses at their own pace over seven weeks, from June 29 to August 14.
Beyond coding, students gain real-world insights through Partner Events with leading tech organizations, connect with peers through Girls Who Code’s private Discord community, and join optional Student Hours for live support. Participants earn a certificate for each completed course and join Girls Who Code’s lifelong alumni network, gaining access to mentorship, internships, and career opportunities in tech.
Students can apply by February 25th for priority consideration. The application closes on April 10th.
