Good morning Franklin families,
Tomorrow is Veterans’ Day and school is closed. Take some time to remember and appreciate all those who have dedicated their lives to protect our country. If you have the capacity to do so, take time to honor our veterans by volunteering in support of our community. Hands On Asheville Buncombe maintains a daily list of volunteer opportunities, including some that are good for older teens. Asheville Area Habitat and BeLoved Asheville are also doing great work in our community with volunteers. BeLoved has an updated list of donation needs on their website as well. Let’s keep our community spirit strong!
We have two weeks and two days until our Fall break. Most students are adapting well to the return of school and are ready to really dig in to make up for some of our lost instructional time. We are encouraging teachers to hold high expectations, maintain consistent routines and structures in the classroom, and resume engaging and challenging work. This is a trauma-informed response – providing structure and expectations helps students recover and heal. To help us better understand the social and emotional status of our students, we will ask all students to complete the SECA survey this week. SECA is a student-facing survey for students in grades 5-12. The assessment measures eight social-emotional skills:
- 1) self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses
- 2) self-awareness of emotions
- 3) self-management of emotions
- 4) self-management of goals
- 5) self-management of school work
- 6) relationship skills
- 7) social awareness
- 8) responsible decision-making
This survey is part of our schoolwide MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) program. Last year we began work to improve our MTSS program overall, including a screening tool like SECA to help us better identify the social strengths and areas for growth of our students. With the recent impact of Hurricane Helene, it feels more important than ever! A copy of the survey is attached.
If your student is struggling with the return to school, reach out. Contact their Crew leader or a school counselor. It’s so important for students to be in school, especially after disruptions like we have experienced this year!
We are stronger together. Thank you for choosing Franklin and for working with us to create a great school community.

After School Clubs
New this Week – Math Club!
FSI math club will start on Tuesday November 12, right after school. It will be hosted in room #224 from 3:30-5:00 pm every Tuesday. Math club is open to anyone in grade 5 through 12. Over the years, it has been a great adventure and experience for many of our students to explore the beauty and application of math outside their classrooms. Students will also get a unique opportunity to compete at regional and national level. Math club is a fun and competitive activity that any student can participate in. It is a great way for students to develop intuitive thinking skills, and learn new types of math. Students will not only learn new materials, but will apply their previous knowledge from school to fun and challenging problems. Furthermore, they will learn to view math not as a set of rules or guidelines, but as an art. Math is a subject full of creativity and opportunity that many students enjoy. Besides the academic benefits, math club is also a great way to meet new people and develop teamwork skills. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Teshale Byan, tbyan@thefsi.us.
We have updated our Club listing, which is also posted on our website. Many clubs are starting or resuming this week! You can check the listing and see which clubs are starting back up here: 2024 FSI Clubs. Please remember that students need to sign in to Beyond the Bell for after school clubs.
Racist Messages Alert
We are aware of racist messages that have been sent to Black college and high school students across the country over the past week. These messages appear to be a large-scale targeted effort. Federal and state agencies are investigating the messages. We have not heard of any incidents related to students in our school. If your student receives or sees a message please let us know so that we can help support your student and assist in reporting the messages to the police and authorities. You can learn more about these message by doing a simple google search to find news reports.

Apply for Free/Reduced Lunch
We strongly encourage families to apply for free and reduced lunch. If your family is experiencing a loss of income due to the hurricane, you may qualify for free or reduced meals based on your current income. It is important to our school to collect this information for two reasons. First – it helps us support our families! We will use the free and reduced meal application for all school-based financial aid and scholarships, including meals as well as scholarships for field trips, Beyond the Bell services, and clubs.
Having accurate information about the number of families who qualify for free or reduced lunch also supports the school. Some sources of funding are based on this number.
You can apply for the free and reduced meal program at www.myschoolbucks.com or under the quick links through your My School Bucks app. If you have any issues, contact Tammey Harper at tharper@thefsi.us.
