Good morning Franklin families,
This Wednesday we will host our fall Student Led Conferences (SLCs). This means that students will not have classes on Wednesday. Each student will attend school only for their scheduled conference time, along with their parent or guardian. We recognize that taking time away from work to attend conferences is a big ask! SLCs are an important part of our EL Education model, putting students at the center of their learning and their pathways.
Our fall SLCs are “Listening” conferences. This is a time for students and their parents to help us learn more deeply about each student’s strengths, areas for growth, goals, and future plans. We appreciate your involvement and support for the conferences and we look forward to seeing many of you on Wednesday.
SLCs are scheduled by your student’s Crew leader. If you do not have or know your student’s scheduled time, please reach out to their Crew leader.
If you need help with getting into the Infinite Campus parent portal, MySchoolBucks online payment and registration system, applying for free or reduced lunch, or logging into Canvas, the learning management platform – please come early or plan to stay after your student’s conference. We will be in the Community Room ready to provide assistance! Just come by the Community Room and look for our help tables.
As a reminder, students participating in after school clubs must be registered in MySchoolBucks and must sign into Beyond the Bell. The current list of after school clubs is included later in this newsletter.
It’s a busy week ahead with athletic events almost every night and the music department’s first Open Mic night at Doc Brown’s BBQ. Come on out and support our students at one or more of these events!

Congrats to HS Volleyball for a season opening sweep of Mount Pisgah 3-0!! Great plays and serves by A. Kabat, R. Stockwell and G. Newman.
HS Soccer started their season at Mount Pisgah and came away with a tough 0-0 tie in rainy conditions. Had some chances that hit the crossbar and posts. Great effort and great start to the season.

The next meeting will take place on 9/25/24 from 12:45-2:00 pm. We will be having elections for the following positions: President, Vice President, Publicity Coordinator, and Secretary. All students running for office must prepare a speech, and may make a poster if they would like.
College Corner
This Thursday, 6:00 – 7:30 pm, The College Foundation is hosting a Senior Night at Enka High School auditorium. All FSI seniors and families are invited to join to learn more about the college application process, how to apply for financial aid and scholarships, and how to complete the RDS for in-state tuition. Come out and learn more!
Open Mic Night Mon, Sept 16, 6 – 8 pm at Doc Brown’s BBQ
Anyone is welcome to perform at this event, it is not limited to only music students! Come sing, perform, read a short, a poem, or dance. Express yourself at this fun community event on a beautiful fall evening! As well as hosting us at the restaurant for this event, Doc Brown’s is generously donating 10% of the restaurant’s sales earned during those hours to the music department, so come out and show your support!!

Health News
A friendly reminder that students in 7th and 12th grade and students who are new to school need to turn their vaccinations into Nurse Courtney by 9/25/24, if you have not already done so. Students who are new to public schools in the state of NC need their NC Health assessment turned in by 9/25/24. Paper notices went out at Meet the Teacher for those who had not yet submitted vaccination forms. .If your student has enrolled after that point, please make sure you contact the nurse to see what is missing. A final notice will go out to all students who have not submitted vaccination information at SLC’s on 9/18/24. Parents may turn in their vaccinations to the front office while they are on campus for SLC’s. Under NC state regulations, students who do not have vaccinations and/or their NC Health Assessment turned in by 9/25/24 will be excluded from school until those are turned in. After School Clubs
We’re excited to launch our after school clubs! There have been lots of questions about extracurriculars and clubs this year. We have made some changes to our after school programs and we understand that change is hard. The changes are necessary to continue to provide the range and number of extracurricular activities at FSI and to improve student safety and security. Over the past few years we have offered many after school clubs at no cost to our families. But this has come at a great cost to the school. Our most valuable resource – our teachers and staff – have donated their time to operate the clubs. The school has contributed space, supplies, snacks, and funds to keep these clubs running. It’s not sustainable and it takes funding away from our academic program.
In general, after school clubs will cost $15 per day. This fee will cover the following:
- Payment for staff time
- Snacks and materials for clubs
- Scholarship funds for students who would otherwise not be able to attend
The club fee does not apply to the following:
- Bolts Athletics: Team sports is its own program. There is an annual fee to participate. The annual fee is based on the fees charged by Buncombe County Schools for their athletic programs ($50 for high school, $45 for middle school). Note that many charter schools run middle school sports through their afterschool programs with much higher cost to families.
- School theatre and music: Our theatre and music programs are focused on performing. Rehearsals and activities that support performances are not part of the after school club program.
- Middle School Student Council and High School Student Government: These leadership opportunities are central to our mission as a school and are offered without a cost to families.
- Community Council (HS): This service organization helps promote school culture and is central to our mission. No fee to participate!
- Affinity Groups, clubs meeting during the school day, and service opportunities are listed here for informational purposes but are offered without fees.
If your student wants to participate in clubs but you cannot afford the fee, please complete the free/reduced lunch application. We will review applications and provide scholarships to the extent possible. The school does NOT receive any funding for our after school programs.
Want to start a new club? We invite students and parents to propose new clubs! For safety, consistency, and liability purposes all clubs must have a staff sponsor to provide supervision and support. Outdoor Club
Open to all grades, the outdoor club learns and practices outdoor skills for camping, hiking, fishing and exploring. We meet after school to plan trips and practice skills, and head out about one weekend a month for adventures.

Chess Club
Looking for a great way to strengthen your focus and elevate your creativity? Join the Chess Club! Math Club
FSI Math Club is open to all students interested in the beauty of math! Students will prepare for the WCU math contest – but more than that, they will explore the creative aspects of math in a fun environment. Students collaborate with their peers to solve intriguing puzzles using math, learn about great mathematicians and their contribution to society, and also design geometric structures using different mathematical theories and principles. All grades are welcome! Math Club will begin during the second quarter, meeting times will be published then!

Middle School Creative Writing Club
Are you a fan of writing, reading and sharing books you love with others? Then the MS Creative Writing Club is the place for you! Students are challenged weekly with new ideas to help enhance and support their love of writing. Using prompts, journalling and group collaboration, students will have the opportunity to write for poetry and prose competitions, individual work or collaborative pieces for classes. Bring your journal and join the fun! KOTLC fans will find that there are often discussions about the awesomeness of Shannon Messenger’s book series during club time!

Middle School Drama Club (no fee)
The middle school drama club is centered around the annual production of a play. The auditions and rehearsals typically take place during the second quarter of the school year. Depending on the play being produced, there are opportunities for students to assist with technical elements of the production. The play is performed in the third quarter for FSI students and families. The drama club is a wonderful opportunity for students to create community and express themselves artistically..

MS Ultimate Club

MS Newspaper Club

5th Grade Girls on the Run
5th graders only! GOTR inspires individuals of all abilities to discover, build, and grow their self-confidence. Together, they experience a sense of belonging and connection as a team. At the end of the season, the team completes a community impact project and a 5K together, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and sets a confident mindset into motion.

Student Government is Franklin’s largest organization and involved in almost all aspects of student life. ALL students at Franklin are a part of SGA just by being a student here. From Prom to Founder’s Day to Graduation and Winter Wonderland, SGA is focused on improving the overall student experience.
Students can volunteer for committees, run to represent your grade, or apply and interview to lead a committee or be a part of Executive Council. There are SO many ways to make an impact. What are you waiting for?

HS TEDx Youth
TEDxYouth is an opportunity for students to truly be leaders in their own learning. From selecting the theme to finding speakers and running the actual event, this is a youth-led event through and through. Habitat for Humanity Leadership (no fee – service & leadership opportunity)
This club raises funds to support a Habitat for Humanity Student build. Five area high schools collaborate to sponsor and build a Habitat House every other year. Meeting information TBA. This is a great leadership opportunity that looks great on your resume and prepares you for participation or leadership in clubs at many colleges and universities!

High Boltage Theatre (FSI’s High School Drama Club) (no fee for rehearsals & productions)
The FSI High School Drama Club is all about building high quality theatre makers and productions. In the ’24 – ’25 school year, the club will typically meet on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays beginning with some workshops and activities focused on acting, movement, and backstage jobs (i.e. sound, lights, set and props creation) in preparation for auditions and rehearsals for a high school musical. Students can attend some or all of those offerings. Meets 3:45 – 5:15 or 3:45 – 6:00 when rehearsals begin. Once the show is cast, club meetings will be devoted to acting, singing, and dance rehearsals, as well as tech jobs, like painting scenery and making props. Drama Club is a unique opportunity to be creative, build strong friendships, and develop new skills, all while having serious fun. In addition to the full-length musical, we are plotting a couple of other fun projects and activities. You don’t need experience to get involved!

HS Volleyball club is open to all genders, come and build skills and have fun! The fee for this club is the annual HS athletics fee ($50). Science Olympiad
It is a STEM based club that explores 23 events/topics that have been created by the national Science Olympiad organization. Science Olympiad is a competition between local Middle school & High school teams in the Asheville area. The tournament takes place at UNC Asheville in the Spring. MS Quadrobics Clubs
Quadrobics is a sport that involves walking on all fours, no equipment needed other than tennis shoes. 7th & and 8th grade only. Will meets Thursdays from 3:15-4:30pm when a staff sponsor is identified. We are also seeking a sponsor for a 5th and 6th grade club, date and time TBD.
Peer Support Council (PSC) (no fee – leadership program)
Peer Support Council (PSC) is a group of students, elected by their peers. They serve as resources to assist with peer mediation and conflict resolution and support both in and out of class. These students contribute to a positive climate at school. Members of PSC receive training in mediation and conflict resolution skills. PSC convenes as needed with students and crew leaders that are involved with honor and/or discipline violations. After the PSC hears a case, it makes a recommendation to the Dean of Students and/or Executive Director regarding consequences or restorative justice. The PSC uses the Franklin School’s “Code of Conduct” as the basis for all recommendations. We anticipate Peer Support Council will get started late fall or at the beginning of 2nd semester.

Infinite Campus Parent Portal
We’ve had so many questions about Infinite Campus! If you have successfully joined the Parent Portal -you can just skim this section. Hopefully this FAQ will be helpful!
What is Infinite Campus?
Infinite Campus is the state’s new Student Information System for all NC schools. It replaces PowerSchool. All student and family information is stored in Infinite Campus, and is linked with all our other systems such as MySchoolBucks school online payment system and Canvas learning management system. We are in the first phase of the transition. All NC schools will transition to Infinite Campus by next year.
What is the Parent Portal?
The Parent Portal is how families access Infinite Campus. Families can update their contact information and student demographics, update all medical and annual forms, submit attendance notes, view student schedules, and receive messages from the school through the Parent Portal.
How do I get into the Parent Portal?
Parents received emails through Infinite Campus with a link to join the portal. You must use the link in the email – these were sent last week and sent again on Friday.
- Infinite Campus recommends that you join the portal from a computer or chromebook, not from your phone
- You must complete the setup at one time – so start the process when you have time to finish
- Do not try to sign up via the QR code included with the Welcome Packets. The QR code asks for an “activation code”. We do not have activation codes.
If you have followed the instructions and you are still unable to get into the Parent Portal, please complete the following GOOGLE FORM so we can help you. Do not email – we cannot respond to all the individual email requests.
I didn’t receive an email about the Parent Portal. What do I do?
We are finding that some data was either lost or did not come over correctly in the transfer from Powerschool to Infinite Campus. If you did not receive an email about the Parent Portal, it’s likely that your contact information wasn’t coded correctly in the transfer. We’ll help! Please complete the GOOGLE FORM and let us know you did not receive the Parent Portal information.
Where do I get the activation code?
We are not using the activation codes. Please look for the email with the link to join the Parent Portal and follow those instructions. We are sorry for the confusion!
We’re returning Franklin families. Why do we need to fill out this information again?
This is a two-part answer. We are required to collect some information every year, so the duplication is just part of the process. Also, some crucial information was lost in the transfer from Powerschool to Infinite Campus. We need families to complete this process so we have current information in our system.
When will students be able to join the Student Portals?
We hope students will be able to get into Infinite Campus within the next week. Students will sign into Infinite Campus through NCED Cloud – the same way they log into Powerschool and Canvas. As soon as the Student Portal is ready, we will help students get logged in.
MySchoolBucks Online Payment System & School Lunch
We use MySchoolBucks as our online payment system. You can pay for Beyond the Bell, athletic fees, and school lunch through MySchoolBucks.
Families apply for free and reduced lunch through MySchoolBucks. We will use the free and reduced lunch application for all needs-based scholarships and financial support – including school nutrition, Beyond the Bell and clubs, and field trips. This will provide an efficient and fair process for all families. Once a student is found eligible, you will not have to complete multiple applications.
We will be serving breakfast and lunch this week! Students can pay with cash or with credit or debit cards, or on their school accounts. We will feed students even if they don’t have an account yet. Students are always welcome to bring bagged lunches from home – but we’ll be ready to feed everyone who needs a school lunch.
Beyond the Bell
Beyond the Bell is our before and after school program. This year, all student clubs are part of Beyond the Bell. Students who are at school after dismissal will be placed in Beyond the Bell for supervision. The only exceptions are students in athletics practices or school theatre and music rehearsals. Students waiting for late athletic practices must either be under the direct supervision of their coaches or they will be placed in Beyond the Bell. Beyond the Bell is available from dismissal until 6 pm every day, including Wednesdays. Daily fees are $1 for morning care (7:15- 7:45 am), $15 for daily care, and $25 for the extended Wednesday. The daily fee helps cover the cost of staff and supplies for our afterschool programs. Limited scholarships are available up to the school’s capacity. We will use the free and reduced lunch application for all scholarship determinations.

MANNA Packs for Kids
MANNA Packs for Kids is a take-home food program that provides a weekly bag of food to students. Bags will contain items such as proteins, fruits, vegetables, snacks and/or breakfast items.The “MANNA Packs for Kids” program’s mission is to serve those families with children who are experiencing economic difficulty and could use assistance in providing food when school meals are not an option.
